Provincetown Blues – These images of Provincetown at night are digitally captured, transferred to film and then printed using one of the oldest photographic processes: cyanotype (also called sun prints). Each one is unique and made on heavy, handmade artisan paper. They can appear three dimensional as a result of the time they spend soaking in water to remove the exposing medium, I’ve always loved Provincetown at night. Shadows are deep and mysterious; the way moonlight and streetlights play on wet streets, across billboards and over weathered shingles creates a moody reverie that captures the essence of a magical place. |

Herring Cove Series – It’s a short drive from my home in Provincetown to Herring Cove Beach. During the summer I go there several times a day to capture both the light as it changes with the hour and the weather, and the constant parade of beach-goers who use the bathhouse and visit the adjacent snack bar. I’ve hung around there so long, I’ve almost become part of the scenery, so people rarely notice me visually eavesdropping on their comings and goings. Each day brings new possibilities – characters (as only Provincetown can provide), mini-dramas, mysteries, partings and reunions. In each of these photographs I have tried to capture what Constantine Manos calls “a magic moment.” |

The Fenway Series – When people say baseball is their ‘passion’ they are usually referring to the sport and the teams. While I dearly (and yes, passionately) love the sport and the teams, for me the stadium (particularly Fenway Park) and the fans are the first and foremost objects of my interest. I spent seasons photographing in and around Fenway Park with the goal of capturing small moments that describe, in a picture rather than words, what the place is really all about. What these pictures show – the noise, the underbelly of the stadium, the glare of the light towers, the smell of beer mixed with cotton candy and grilled sausages, the fervor of the fans when we are winning, the looks of devastation when we aren’t – sustain me when the season is over, and remind me (as we always say when we lose on opening day), “there’s always next year.” |

Pool Pinhole Series – Placing a pinhole cover on my digital camera, I capture the motion of both the water and the swimmer. There is no viewfinder on this camera, so each image is a surprise. The accident of light, shadow and movement pushed though a tiny hole gives these pictures an amorphous, dreamy look. The images are the colors of summertime punctuated with the fluid motion and unexpected positions that bodies in water achieve. |

Water Images – I am drawn to images of people and reflections in water because of the ‘accidental’ nature of the results. The play of light, the movement of the water, objects on and under the water, the subtle shifts in color and the areas of blur as well of those of sharp focus contribute to the mystery of what is what is below the surface. |

Polaroid Pinhole Beach Images – These photographs were taken with a Polaroid backed pinhole camera that I built. This beach is in Truro, Massachusetts on Cape Cod. I am particularly fond of the iconic colors rendered by the film that gives a vintage postcard feel to the prints. |

What’s Your Food Fantasy? – An avalanche of ice cream? A big bag of crispy fries? A foot long, over-stuffed submarine sandwich? All these things make me happy – and not just when they appear on my table. They are just as satisfying when viewed through the lens of my camera and ultimately on my computer, where I “paint” them, digitally speaking, into larger-than-life, super scrumptious works of food art – a feast for the eyes. No calories are consumed while ‘just looking,’ and the bogus nutritional labels are a comment on our need to temper pleasure with cold hard numbers.
